MICHAEL CATOVSKY (Caller)

From being an unknown name a decade ago, Michal has now appeared at most of the major folk festivals. He calls an eclectic set of dances. They are enjoyable enough to please beginners and unusual enough to surprise and delight more experienced dancers. He gives a lot of energy to performances, whilst still managing to call with clarity, confidence and charm. He collects new dances wherever possible, and spends a long time choosing the right one to match each bands' tunes. He writes much of his own material. The rest of the dances are taken not only from the British, but also French, Italian, American and other international traditions. He is able to do a whole evening of contra dances, if required.

The first gig at which he ever called was in June 1997, with The Angel Band (the core of whom now play as Cheap Jack.) Since then, he has gone on to appear at Sidmouth, Towersey, Bromyard, Cambridge and Ely Folk festivals, among others, as well as at the Oxfolk, Godalming and Knees Up North ceilidhs. The Cock & Bull Band asked him to become their new regular caller in the interval of the first gig theyever did together, in March 1998 at a Saxmundham ceilidh. The band's originality and style suits his calling perfectly. He has also called for Sundance and The Hosepipe Band, and has done some work with Random, Peeping Tom, Florida, MoonDance and Hekety. At a dance camp on St. Croix in the Caribbean in February 1999, he fulfiled one of his long-standing ambitions, to call some Contra dances with Wild Asparagus.

Michael is also available to act as an MC, teach children's ceilidh and Morris dance workshops, or run beginners' French dance workshops.

If you would like to see him call, keep an eye on this web site for future dates.
